Unsaved Brulé French Toast

Ingredients

Serves 4

  • 1 cup(s) granulated sugar
  • 4 each H‑E‑B French Toast Sliced Breakfast Bread, or as needed
  • 1/2 cup(s) salted butter, melted and kept warm

Instructions

  1. Place a medium to large non-stick pan over medium heat. While the pan is heating, prepare bread slices.
  2. Spread sugar evenly in a shallow plate or bowl. Brush each slice of bread liberally on one side with melted butter.
  3. Lightly press the buttered side of bread into the sugar and gently shake off excess sugar.
  4. Place no more than 2 slices of bread at a time into the hot pan, sugar side down. Cook for approximately 2-3 minutes or until the sugar has browned and is not sticking to the pan.
  5. Use tongs, not a spatula, to flip the toast over and immediately remove from the pan onto a sheet pan. Repeat the process with each additional toast as needed.
  6. Bread is ready to eat when the sugar on top has hardened.
  7. Chef's Note: Only cook the sugar-coated side of the bread; the heat will steam the other side, keeping it soft. Be careful when working with hot sugar. Top with fresh fruit and whipped cream for a full treat.
