Unsaved Apple Pie with Cheddar Cheese Crust

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups All purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp H-E-B Kosher Salt
  • 1/2 cup H-E-B Select Ingredients Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • 12 tbsp H-E-B Sweet Cream Butter, cubed
  • 4 tbsp Ice water
  • 3/4 cup H-E-B Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Hill Country Fare Ground Cinnamon
  • 6 Gala apple, peeled, cored and chopped
  • 1 Lemon(s), juiced and zested
  • 3 tbsp H-E-B Sweet Cream Butter
  • 1 Egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup Water

Instructions

  1. To make pie crust, combine flour, salt, cheese and cubed butter in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Work dough until it has a sandy texture.
  3. Once butter is completely incorporated, add in ice water. Mix just enough until dough is formed. Once dough comes together stop working it.
  4. Divide dough in half and form into 2 separate disks. Wrap individually and chill.
  5. While dough is chilling, combine brown sugar, cinnamon, apples, lemon juice and butter in a large bowl. Toss well to coat apples.
  6. Preheat oven to 450˚F.
  7. On a floured surface roll out the chilled dough disks, one to line a 9 inch pie dish and the other for the top crust.
  8. Spread out the bottom crust in the pie pan. Mound apple filling on top of crust.
  9. Lay remaining pie crust over filling. Using a paring knife, remove any extra dough.
  10. To pinch edges together, place a finger on the inside edge of pastry. Using thumb and index finger of the other hand, press pie dough around finger. Continue around until all of the dough is sealed.
  11. Combine egg and water to make an egg wash. Brush over dough.
  12. Bake until golden brown, approximately 45 minutes.
  13. Let pie stand briefly before serving.
