  • For best results: For firmer rice, use less water and simmer for a shorter time. For softer rice, use more water and simmer for a longer time. Do not lift lid during cooking (the steam cooks the rice). To retain vitamins, do not rinse before or drain after cooking. Stove Top Directions: 1. Bring water to boil in saucepan. Add butter or margarine and salt, if desired. 2. Stir in rice. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 20 minutes or until rice is tender and most of the water is absorbed. 3. Remove from heat. Let stand 5 minutes. Fluff with fork before serving. Microwave Directions: 1. Mix 2 1/2 cups water and 1 cup rice in microwavable bowl. Add 2 tsp. Butter or margarine and 1/2 tsp. Salt, if desired. Cover. 2. Microwave on high 5 minutes. Stir. Microwave on medium (50% power) 20 minutes or until rice is tender and most of the water is absorbed, stirring occasionally. 3. Let stand in microwave 5 minutes. Fluff with fork before serving. Microwave ovens vary; adjust cooking times as needed. Cooking times are based on an 1100 watt microwave oven.
