Thankfully, you'll find special terms on each label that describe the style, taste and type of wine that's in the bottle. Asti - Made from Muscato grapes grown in the Asti region of Italy. Brut - Very dry champagne with little residual sugar. Blanc de Blanc - Translation is "white wine made from white grapes." This champagne is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. Blanc de Noir - Translation is "white wine made from black grapes." Cremant - A creamy style champagne with typically less atmosphere (bubbles). Cuvee - A blend of sparkling wines to make up specific champagne. Cuvee de Prestige - A champagne producer's top "luxury" champagne. Demi Sec - Sweet champagne with 33-50 grams per liter of residual sugar. Dosage - Sugar added to (most) champagnes to attain the required sweetness or roundness. Extra Dry - Dry champagne with some residual sugar. Non-vintage - The blend of current and reserve sparkling wines prepared each year to be consistent with the champagne. Residual Sugar - The sugar in wine after the addition of the dosage. Sec - Slightly sweet champagne with 17-35 grams per liter of residual sugar. Spumante - A sweet champagne made from Muscato grapes. Vintage - The wine or champagne of a single year's harvest, as in Dom Perignon 1983. |
