Wine Basics: Glossary
Legs: Droplets of wine that slide down the inside of a glass after it is swirled. Lively: Usually refers to a wine that is moderately high in acid, with fresh and fruity qualities. Mature: Refers to the period when a wine is properly aged or developed. Nose: Synonomous with aroma, nose is often used to describe an extremely intense bouquet. Oak: Wines aged or fermented in oak barrels take on toasty qualities and flavors of butter and vanilla (for white wines), or coffee and tobacco (for red wines). Oenophile: A wine connoisseur. Off Dry: A wine with a little residual sugar and a slight hint of sweetness. pH: The measure of a wine's acid level. The lower the pH the higher he acid. Punt: The indentation in the bottom of a wine bottle. It is designed to catch sediment. |
