Jack-o'-lanterns started showing up in Ireland during
the 1700s. Only in Ireland, people hollowed out turnips
for their "lanterns" instead of pumpkins. When Irish immigrants came to
America they brought the jack-o'-lantern tradition with
them, but found pumpkins more readily available.
The character of jack-o'-lantern comes from British folklore. It's the story
of a fellow (named Jack) whose spirit wasn't allowed to enter heaven or
hell and ended up wandering the night with a turnip lantern lighting his
waybecoming Jack of the lanternfrightening away evil spirits.
The first time jack-o'-lantern appeared in print was in 1750, referring
to a night watchman.
