Rules of Thumb So you're ready to pack the kids off with a great brown-bag lunch. Where do you start? Let's ask the kids! Here are some quick and easy ideas that are all about what kids like. Ready-to-eat foods A peeled and segmented orange is more likely to get eaten than an unpeeled orange. An apple is much easier to place in the lunch box, but it is also easy to toss or trade away. Small things Use cookie cutters to cut the sandwich bread into a fun shape, such as a triangle or diamond. Dips Use small containers to create cool comboslike pretzels and peanut butter, carrot sticks with dressing, salsa with tortilla chips or gelatin and fruit. Plenty of crunch Blend foods with different textures. For instance, a lunch with applesauce, grilled cheese and gelatin needs some added crunchlike raisins, celery or vanilla wafers. Vary the types of bread you use for sandwiches. Some examples are bagels, pita pockets, English muffins, raisin bread or tortilla wraps. Fun, fun, fun Experiment with drinkable yogurts. Try a pasta salad with fun shapes and colors. Or pack in colorful dry cerealthe non-sugar variety, of course. Use your imagination and think like a kid! Return to Breaking the Brown Bag Blues. |
