The American Red Cross wants to help you protect
your beloved animals. One suggestion to help keep them safe is to create
and evacuation plan for your pets. If you must evacuate, do not leave
your animals behind. Ross Cross disaster shelters are not allowed to accept
pets. So make alternative arrangements, such as:
- Contact hotels and motels outside your immediate area to see if they
accept pets. Keep a list of pet-Friendly places and their phone numbers
with your other disaster supplies.
- Ask friends, relatives or others outside your area if they could shelter
your animals.
- Prepare a list of boarding facilities and veterinarians who could
shelter animals in an emergency. (Include phone numbers.)
- Another suggestion is to assemble a portable pet disaster-supplies
kit. Your kit should include:
- Medications, medical records and a first-aid kit in a waterproof container.
- Sturdy leashes/harnesses and/or carriers to transport your pets safely
and securely (Pets under stress may panic).
- Current photos of your pets in case they get lost.
- Food, portable water, bowls, cat litter/pan and can opener.
- Information on feeding schedules, medical conditions and any behavioral
problems.
- Name and number of your vet in case you have to foster or board your
pets.
- Pet beds and toys, if easily transportable.

- Make sure all dogs and cats are wearing collars that are securely
fastened and have up-to-date identification on them. If you know you're
evacuating to a shelter or another location, attach the phone number
and address of your temporary address on the back of your pets permanent
ID tag using temporary tags or adhesive tape and indelible ink.
