Put safety first
with these glowing Halloween accessories. |
Halloween is a fun time for kids of all ages, and we want to keep it that
way. If you're sending your little ones out trick-or-treating this year,
review these tips with your children to help prepare
them for a safe and enjoyable holiday.
Costumes
- Prevent tripping by making sure your child's costume isn't too long
and that his shoes fit well.
- Make sure your child can see out of his mask clearly.
- Put reflective tape on trick-or-treat bags to make them highly visible.
- Consider adding some reflective tape to costumes.
- Make sure simulated knives and swords are soft and flexible and that
simulated guns do not appear authentic.
Trick-or-Treating
- Always accompany any young children while trick-or-treating.
- Give the kids a couple of quarters for emergency phone calls. And
make sure they know 9-1-1 calls are free.
- Have a set time for trick-or-treating, with a specific start and
end time. (Make sure at least one child wears a watch.)
- Equip your children with flashlights. So they can see and be seen.
(Ensure the batteries are good.)
- Review the area your children will be trick-or-treating in.
- Make sure kids trick-or-treat in groups of three or more people.
- Do not allow kids to ride bicycles while trick-or-treating. Costumes
can easily get hung up in them and cause accidents.
- Instruct your kids to walk on sidewalks. If a sidewalk is not available,
tell them to walk on the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.
- Be sure they know to cross busy streets at intersections or crosswalks
and that they should always look both ways (2 times!) before crossing
any street.
- Make sure they know to not play around parked cars.
Instruct kids to trick-or-treat only at houses that have front porch lights
on.
- Be sure they know to accept treats only at the doorway. Never go
into a house!
- Instruct your kids to not eat any candy until after they get back
home and you've inspected it.
- Make sure they know to be cautious of strangers.
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
