King Cake One of the most popular traditions of Mardi Gras is King Cake. Traditionally, New Orleans King Cake is served during carnival season, which begins on January 6th (Twelfth Night) and ends on Mardi Gras Day. This sweet, ring-shaped cake (similar to a coffee cake pastry) symbolizes the journey of the three kings (wise men) who traveled great distances to find the Christ child. Hidden inside the cake is a small plastic figure of a baby that represents baby Jesus. At parties, King Cake is sliced and handed out to guests, at which time the search begins. Traditionally, whoever finds the baby in his or her piece of cake is said to have good fortune throughout the year and must provide the King Cake for next year's party. Join the celebration with your own king cake, available every year during Mardi Gras at your neighborhood H-E-B. |
