H-E-B Bread Is On the Rise New State-of-the-Art H-E-B Bakery Plant Opens in Houston  What
began as a small foray into bread manufacturing in the
1930s, grew by leaps and bounds in 1960 with the opening of our Corpus Chirsti
Bakery, known at the time as "Texas' most modern bread plant."And today, H-E-B raises the bar again with the March 8, 2004, opening of our new Houston Bakery—a 114,000 square foot, fully automated facility in west Houston. This state-of-the-art bakery plant will provide fresh breads and buns for H-E-B's 52 Houston area stores, as well as other H-E-B stores in the region, and will operate seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Not only does the new plant make an even greater variety of breads than previously available under the H-E-B brand, it works fast! Real fast. It's designed to produce 153 loaves of bread and 750 buns per minute, respectively, increasing H-E-B's total bread-making capacity to 26,690 pounds of bread per hour. That's 3.54 miles of bread end-to-end per hour. (In a year, that's enough bread to circle the earth four times!) In addition to the tremendous output of bakery goods, the plant employs 70 Partners from the Houston area and will allow H-E-B to add 22 new bread items to our stores this year alone.
