2009Landmark Grand Detour Pinot Noir

Sold Out

Pinot Noir-California-Sonoma Valley

All of the Pinot Noir is hand-harvested in the vineyard, then destemmed, sorted, and cold soaked for five days in open top fermentors. This extended cold soak enhances the color and flavors in the wine without imparting bitter flavors thanks to the absence of alcohol. We also practice a partial whole cluster fermentation, leaving about 15-20% of the clusters intact, which imparts a complex structure and spicy notes to the wine. California.

Founded by a scion of the John Deere family, Landmark moved to its current spot in the Sonoma Valley in 1989. Since then, they've been making consistently rich, complex Chardonnays that are underpriced for their quality. Longtime winemaker Eric Stern also makes a fine Pinot Noir and is also showing steady improvement with Syrah. The key here, as with so many top wines, is limiting manipulation in the cellars. Stern succeeds admirably.
