Hank Wetzel produced AVV s first wines in 1975 and the wine world quickly took notice of the elegant Cabernet Sauvignons from Alexander Valley. Thirty years later in 2004 he decided to focus on the flavor profile that made the valley famous, releasing a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon known as the Alexander School Reserve. We continue the tradition with the 2010. This 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon wine is a testament to AVV Winemaker Kevin Hall's skill and the Alexander Valley's unique ability to grow amazing Cabernet Sauvignon.
We harvested the fruit from a single gently sloping vineyard with older, mature vines. These low yielding vines produce loose clusters of pea sized grapes that ripen evenly and have incredible concentration, tremendous color and layers of flavor. 2010 was a cool growing year with fewer heat spikes than in the past few years. Diligent vineyard management was the key to achieving great fruit development and uniform ripening. The tiny grapes developed even richer flavors and concentration than in prior years.
Aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, the 2010 Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the Alexander Valley. Aromas of black cherry, cassis, oak and vanilla fill the glass. This is a big wine with a chewy texture. The flavors of dark fruit and chocolate linger for a long time, giving you a chance to reflect on the history and tradition of Alexander Valley Vineyards and Cabernet Sauvignon. The finish is long and lasting.

AVV's vineyards stretch from the banks of the Russian River up on to south facing hillsides. Alexander Valley Vineyards produces 100,000 cases annually, 17 varietal wines and proprietary blends. Seventy-five percent of AVV s production is red wine. Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon constitute roughly half of total production. Other varietals include Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Gewurztraminer, Syrah, Sangiovese, Viognier, and Cabernet Franc. CYRUS, a limited production, proprietary red wine, named in honor of the pioneer Cyrus Alexander, is AVV s benchmark, honoring the past while signaling the future.
