Cabernet Sauvignon-California-Napa Valley

This Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is dense and round, opening with generous aromas of dark berry and cherry leading to layers of black licorice and graphite notes on the nose--true umami in complexity. The palate shows a depth and richness of fruit flavors ranging from blackberry, boysenberry and cassis. The concentrated fruit is wrapped in powdery tannins creating an ideally balanced wine with vibrancy that makes it a wine worthy of aging.

Etude's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley bursts from the glass with juicy dark berries, grilled herbs, menthol, tar, tobacco and licorice. Firm tannins provide the backbone as this powerful, muscular Cabernet opens up in the glass. Raspberry jam, flowers and spices add lift on the finish. Slightly wild notes detract a touch from the wine's overall balance. Otherwise, this is a fine effort. The 2009 needs a few years to settle down, after which it should drink beautifully for another decade. The blend is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: 2017 - 2029.

A firm and sturdy effort, at times rustic, with crushed rock and loamy earth woven with dried currant and dark berry. Intense and persistent, this is chunky now, built for cellaring. Best from 2014 through 2024.

The underlying philosophy at Etude wines is that winemaking begines in the vineyard, long before the grapes are harvested. The Etude winemaking team-Tony Soter, Jon Priest and Franci Ashton-believes that inspired grape growing dimishes the need for intervention by the winemaker, the end result being superior wines that are grown, not made. Collectively this team has more than 50 years experience they apply in the quest to extract the most from the plants they tend in the places they grown, while at the same time tread lightly on the environment.
