It may surprise many people to learn that sugars are considered carbohydrates. While sugars do provide our body with energy in the form of calories, sugar does not give us much else. |

Commonly referred to as "empty calories," sugary foods are lacking important nutrients. Grains, fruits vegetables and vitamins are a source of carbohydrates, but these foods also provide vital nutrients that our bodies need to function optimally and to fight off disease. For example, the naturally occurring sugars found in fruits come packaged with nutrients. So when a food provides the calories we need for energy as well as a rich supply of vitamins and minerals, this is what we refer to as nutrient density. Can we afford some "Extra Calories"? | |
