1 lb ground beef
* coarse ground black pepper
1 red apple
1 green apple
4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
1/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted
4 leaves boston lettuce
8 slices rye bread
1/2 cup hot sweet mustard
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
Shape ground beef into 4 patties. Season with pepper.
Core apples and slice into 1/4-inch thick rings. Grill burgers over Medium coals for 12 to 14 minutes total.
Turn after 7 minutes, and top with cheese.
Grill apple slices during last 8 minutes. Toast bread on perimeter of grill. Remove burgers.
While cheese is hot, sprinkle each burger with 1 tablespoon almonds. Mix mustard and horseradish. Spread 2 teaspoons on each of 4 bread slices. Top with grilled burgers, apple rings, lettuce leaves and remaining bread slices.
