dark molasses

ground ginger

teaspoon

water
1/4
cup
powdered sugar

a few drops of water

a drop or two of food coloring
![]() Instructions ![]() Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
![]() In a large bowl using an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar. Beat in molasses. Sift together flour, baking soda, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, and salt. Add sifted ingredients to creamed mixture in three parts, alternating with water and ending with dry ingredients.
![]() Roll dough out and cut with cookie cutters. Gently lift with a metal spatula and place on a greased cookie sheet.(Or you can roll dough directly on a cookie sheet, cut desired shape and remove excess dough from around the shapes.
![]() Decorate before baking with bits of condied fruit, red-hots, raisins, or marshmallows. (Can be decorated with colored icing after baking. Bake for approximately 8 minutes. Test for doneness by pressing the dough with your finger. If it springs bake after pressing, the cookies are ready to be cooled on a rack.
![]() Cookie Icing: In a small bowl, add water to powdered sugar until desired consistency is reached.
![]() Add food coloring until desired color is achieved.
![]() Apply icing with a wooden pick or small knife for other features; caps, hair, belts or shoes.
