1teaspoonground ginger raisins or shredded apples (optional),
1Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2Sift flour and baking powder into a large bowl.
3Mix shortening and water.
4Pour shortening mixture into flour mixture; mix well.
5Knead until dough is smooth and satiny.
6Roll out on floured surface.
7Brush dough with melted butter.
8Mix sugar, cinnamon and ginger well.
9Sprinkle dough with spice mixture and raisins or shredded apple if desired.
10Roll up tightly.
11Cut into 1/4 inch wide slices.
12(For a neat cut, use an electric knife.
13Place slices on cookie sheet.
14Brush lightly with butter.
15Bake 40 minutes.
16Remove from oven and place on cooling rack.
17Cover with waxed paper, cool 10 minutes.
18Ice if desired
