Reduced Sugar Cinnamon Rolls

3 cups self-rising flour

2 tablespoon baking powder

1/4 cup vegetable shortening

3/4 cup warm water

1/2 stick butter, melted

1/3 cup sugar

2 tablespoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground ginger raisins or shredded apples (optional)

2 cups powdered sugar

1/4 cup water


Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Sift flour and baking powder into a large bowl.
Mix shortening and water.
Pour shortening mixture into flour mixture; mix well.
Knead until dough is smooth and satiny.
Roll out on floured surface.
Brush dough with melted butter.
Mix sugar, cinnamon and ginger well.
Sprinkle dough with spice mixture and raisins or shredded apple if desired.
Roll up tightly.
Cut into 1/4 inch wide slices.
(For a neat cut, use an electric knife.
Place slices on cookie sheet.
Brush lightly with butter.
Bake 40 minutes.
Remove from oven and place on cooling rack.
Cover with waxed paper, cool 10 minutes.
Ice if desired
