Ingredients

1/4 cup butter

1/2 cup white or brown sugar

1/2 cup dark molasses

3 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon cloves

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup water

1/4 cup powdered sugar

* a few drops of water

* a drop or two of food coloring

Directions


Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl using an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar. Beat in molasses. Sift to
gether flour, baking soda, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, and salt. Add sifted ingredients to c
reamed mixture in three parts, alternating with water and ending with dry ingredients.
Roll dough out and cut with cookie cutters. Gently lift with a metal spatula and place on
a greased cookie sheet.(Or you can roll dough directly on a cookie sheet, cut desired shap
e and remove excess dough from around the shapes.
Decorate before baking with bits of condied fruit, red-hots, raisins, or marshmallows. (Ca
n be decorated with colored icing after baking. Bake for approximately 8 minutes. Test for
doneness by pressing the dough with your finger. If it springs bake after pressing, the c
ookies are ready to be cooled on a rack.
Cookie Icing: In a small bowl, add water to powdered sugar until desired consistency is re
ached.
Add food coloring until desired color is achieved.
Apply icing with a wooden pick or small knife for other features; caps, hair, belts or sho
es.
