4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
2/3 cup golden raisins
1 tablespoon sugar
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
2 tablespoons buttermilk
Heat oven to 400 degrees.
Sift flour, salt, baking soda and cream of tartar into a mixing bowl.
Stir raisins and sugar into flour mixture.
Add 1 1/2 cups buttermilk and mix to form a firm dough.
Knead dough on a lightly floured surface about 2 minutes until surface appears somewhat sm
ooth. Form a flattened round about 9 inches in diameter and 3/4-inch thick. Cut a deep "X"
across the top. Brush top of loaf with 2 tablespoons buttermilk.
Bake on a greased and lightly floured baking sheet 25 minutes. Turn loaf over and return t
o oven to bake 5 minutes more. Remove and wrap in a damp cloth to cool about 15 minutes be
