Five New Burger Toppings

Summertime is hamburger time and we've got five mouth-watering ideas to kick up your weekend cookouts. Bon Appétit!

Over-Easy Egg Over-Easy Egg
There's something so tasty about a rich and gooey egg yolk cascading down the walls of a succulent beef patty, combined with tangy mustard and sweet ketchup and soaking blissfully into a toasted bun. The key is to fry the egg either sunny-side-up or over-easy and to keep the yolk from popping until the first bite. Gently mash it with the top bun and feast your senses.
Burger tip: Get some extra napkins ready.
  • Eggs cooked over-easy to medium
  • Mustard
  • Ketchup
  • Tabasco or hot sauce (optional)
Tomatoes Caprese Tomatoes Caprese
Make Italy's favorite appetizer part of America's favorite entrée! Pile your burger high with plump tomato slices, thick cuts of fresh delicate mozzarella and bright green basil leaves. Pour some H-E-B extra virgin olive oil on top, add tangy balsamic vinegar and then a pinch of salt to the tomatoes as desired.
Burger tip: A crunchier bun goes perfectly with the fresh mozzarella cheese.
  • Fresh mozzarella cheese
  • Basil leaves
  • Roma tomatoes
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
Chunky Guacamole Chunky Guacamole
Texans will look for any excuse to eat guacamole—a burger seems only natural. Guacamole is perfect because it's the only topping needed. Dice onions and tomatoes to put in your Tex-Mex dipping staple, you can even spice up your guacamole with fiery jalapeños if you like. Add a couple tablespoons right on top of your tender-seared patty.
Burger tip: Keep the south of the border theme going and add queso fresco and pico de gallo.
  • Large avocados
  • Onion, diced
  • Tomato, diced
  • Jalapeños (optional)
  • Queso fresco (optional)
  • Pico de gallo (optional)
Hamburger Parmigiana Hamburger Parmigiana
Try this burger-friendly twist on chicken parmigiana. Ground beef and bread have never met a tomato sauce and cheese they didn't like. Make your best marinara sauce and melt both mozzarella and Parmesan cheese atop your freshly cooked hamburger.
Burger tip: Consider ground veal patties for an interesting twist on veal parmigiana.
  • Tomato sauce
  • Oregano or Italian spice blend
  • Garlic salt
  • Pepper
  • Mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Parmesan cheese
Grilled Cheese Buns Cheesy Texas Toast
You'll redefine cheeseburger with this new family-favorite. Stop by the H-E-B deli for some sharp Gruyere cheese slices and pick up some thick Texas Toast to use as buns. Brush a little butter on your Texas Toast and toss them on the grill or heat them in a pan. Then allow the cheese to melt and begin stacking your burger.
Burger tip: Add fresh burger toppings like crunchy lettuce and pickles.
  • Gruyere cheese, sliced
  • Texas toast
  • Butter or Non-stick cooking spray
  • Pickles (optional)
  • Lettuce (optional)
