How It Began
In the U.S., there are two different dates and places that claim the first modern celebration of Father’s Day. On July 5th, 1908, a Father’s Day was held in Fairmont, West Virginia. On June 19th, the same year, it was observed in Washington State.
In West Virginia, it is believed that a woman suggested having a Father’s Day service to her pastor. The story has it that she was inspired to celebrate fathers following a tragic mine explosion that killed 361 men.
Another story involved a woman who was born in Creston, Washington. Her father was a Civil War veteran who reared his six children as a single parent in Spokane. The first June Father’s Day was on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made Father’s Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. However, the holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during Nixon’s presidency.
