The Soul of Juneteenth Celebrations In Texas on June 19, commonly called Juneteenth, people of all races gather to celebrate African American freedom, history and culture. This holiday celebrates the dubious distinction Texas has of announcing the long-overdue news of President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. Unfortunately, when Union General Gordon Granger announced the news in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865more than two years after the proclamation became effective! There are a number of theories why the word was so late in coming. But at the moment, no one seemed to notice. Throughout Galveston thousands of jubilant, newly freed slaves celebrated in the streets. Today, to commemorate the event, Juneteenth holiday tables boast some of the finest traditional African American dishes. Let H-E-B help you celebrate in true Juneteenth style with Sylvia's Soul Food.
