Read on now to find out what's behind all that celebrating on the 16th of September in "Viva Mexico!". Viva Mexico! Mexico's independence is rooted in events that occurred in the country in 1521, when the last Aztec emperor, Cuauhtemoc, was captured by the Spaniards. This event marked the beginning of three centuries of Spanish rule. In 1808, after Napoleon invaded Spain and designated his brother as king of the country, Mexicans determined that a distracted Spain meant the time was right to seek independence. By 1810, influenced and inspired by French philosophers' concepts of liberty and equality and by the War of Independence in the United States, Mexican citizens decided to start a revolt. In the early hours of September 16,1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo, accompanied by several conspirators, rang the bell of his little church in Guanajuato, and gave the cryEl Grito de Dolores! ("Mexicanos, Viva Mexico!"). A call to fight for liberty. This was the beginning of the Independence War, which lasted 10 years. It is Hidalgo's revolutionary cry for freedom that is reenacted and commemorated throughout the country every 16th of September. |
