Together, H-E-B and Its Customers Raise More Than $280,000 to Benefit Soldiers and Families of Fort Hood

Continuing its support of Fort Hood, H-E-B will participate in Fort Hood Community Strong Day with food donations and volunteers

Austin, TX – Dec. 09, 2009 – Through an in-store fundraising campaign launched in response to the tragedy at Fort Hood, H-E-B and its generous customers raised more than $280,000 for the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter Fund. H-E-B kicked off the in-store campaign in early November with a $50,000 donation to the organization, and customers followed suit by raising more than $230,000.

At H-E-B stores throughout Texas, customer simply added donations in increments of $1, $3, or $5 to their total grocery bill between Saturday, Nov. 7 and Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.  One hundred percent of the monies raised benefit the AUSA Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter fund, established to appropriately memorialize the recent tragedy at Fort Hood, and care for the affected soldiers and their families.

“Providing aid in times of disaster is the corner stone of our Helping Here philosophy, which promises to stand by communities during times of crisis. We’re honored that our customers were so generous in their support of the affected victims and families at Fort Hood,” said Winell Herron, group vice president of public affairs and diversity for H-E-B.

In addition to supporting the Fort Hood community through the in-store campaign, H-E-B is participating in Fort Hood Community Strong Day, taking place on Friday, December 11 from 1 – 6 p.m. at Fort Hood. The H-E-B Mobile Kitchen will be onsite serving 4,000 lbs of chopped beef, which will make 20,000 sandwiches, as well as 30,000 bags of H-E-B chips and 20,000 H-E-B sodas. The H-E-B Creamy Creations Ice Cream trailer will also be stocked with cups of ice cream ready to serve.

“Donating food to Fort Hood Community Strong Day is one more way we can show our support and sincere appreciation to the soldiers who serve our country, and their families,” said Herron. “More than 90 H-E-B Partners will be at the event volunteering to help make this event a success.”

For more than 100 years, H-E-B has demonstrated its commitment to communities in crisis by donating emergency supplies, drinking water and food as well as providing convenient ways for customers to give back to their community.
