H-E-B Deepens its Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
Company Becomes First Major Retailer to Power Stores with Windtricity©

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Apr. 23, 2008 – CPS Energy announced today that H-E-B has signed on as its newest and largest Windtricity© customer. Committed to building sustainable communities and leading environmental initiatives in Texas, the move is a natural one for H-E-B. The company will now use this non-polluting, environmentally-friendly energy source to help power its 46 stores located throughout San Antonio and Bexar County.

“Using wind energy to help power our stores is a testament to sustainability being a priority for our business — to make a commitment to our environment is to make a commitment to our communities and to the generations of Texans to come,” said Dya Campos, H-E-B Public Affairs Director. “We hope it will encourage others to learn more about Windtricity and the benefits to our environment and developing sustainable communities.”

Windtricity is a renewable energy option provided by CPS Energy where electricity, generated by wind-powered turbines in West Texas, can be purchased by commercial and residential customers.

“Wind power is one of the oldest forms of renewable energy,” said Bill Reynolds, H-E-B Vice President of Facility Alliance. “Thanks to new technologies, generating wind power as energy has become a viable alternative for us as we work to diversify the sources of energy we purchase.”

All existing H-E-B stores in San Antonio will run off of 10 percent wind power. This percentage translates to 20.2 MM kilowatt-hours (kWh) All new H-E-B locations, including three new stores being built in 2008, will be powered with 35 percent wind power translating to an additional 6.8 MM kilowatt-hours (kWh) which combined is enough energy to power 2,200 homes for a year.  In addition, H-E-B will save 287 MM pounds of CO2 emissions with this purchase.

“We are excited to have H-E-B become our leading user in our Windtricity program,” said Lynda Rodriguez, CPS Energy Manager, Solutions Delivery. “Customers who subscribe to Windtricity do so because of their commitment to support the growth of renewable energy programs and their desire to be an active participant in protecting the environment by minimizing their carbon footprint. They realize that though the cost is slightly higher, it is an investment that is worthwhile to our community and our state.”

CPS Energy, a state and national leader in wind energy, currently receives wind-generated electricity from the Cottonwood Creek Wind Farm near Sweetwater and from the Desert Sky Wind Farm near Iraan, both in West Texas.  Earlier this month, the company announced it will become the first Texas utility to acquire clean, renewable energy from the Peñascal Wind Farm, currently being built near the Texas coast.
