Former UT Longhorn and Dallas Cowboy Wane McGarity Joins H-E-B To Lead Company's Health and Wellness Initiatives

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Feb. 29, 2008 – Professional athlete and native Texan Wane McGarity, former wide receiver for the UT Longhorns, Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints, has joined H-E-B as the company’s Health and Wellness program manager.

In the newly created position, McGarity will be based at the company’s San Antonio headquarters and will be responsible for providing strategic and tactical execution of health and wellness initiatives created for H-E-B customers in communities across Texas.

Of particular focus for McGarity will be outreach efforts centered on the issue of childhood obesity in Texas and the creation and implementation of programs aimed at improving nutrition and increasing physical activity for children and their families.

In addition to working with community organizations and school districts in Texas communities to launch outreach efforts, McGarity will also work internally at H-E-B to integrate health and wellness efforts among the company’s Advertising and Marketing, Public Affairs and Store Operations divisions to align company goals.

Before joining H-E-B, McGarity was an All-America receiver at the University of Texas at Austin and enjoyed four seasons with the NFL as a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys and later the New Orleans Saints. This was followed by a successful three season career high with the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders.

Later, while returning to the University of Texas at Austin to finish his degree following his professional football career, McGarity served as an intern with the university’s football program in which he oversaw the team’s strength training programs and assisted with its running camps. Most recently, McGarity served as a fitness specialist for Xtreme Speed in San Antonio in which he designed and oversaw training programs for local athletes.
