From chicken fried steak covered in a blanket of creamy gravy to a warm bowl of spicy chili, some tastes are distinctively Texan. H-E-B has assembled these established favorites, plus a collection of unique, new dishes, in a cookbook that embraces the food, the people and the traditions of Texas.
Made in Texas is a hardcover, coffee-table cookbook featuring 190 recipes shared by H-E-B customers from across the state. The recipes come with stories and photographs of the people and places that give the Lone Star State its unique flavor. The book was published to commemorate H-E-B’s 100 th anniversary celebration.
“Our Made in Texas cookbook is the first of many opportunities throughout our yearlong anniversary to honor our customers,” said H-E-B Centennial Celebration Project Director Kate Rogers. “The cookbook is a celebration of the food and people of Texas.”
Of course, the book wouldn’t be complete without traditional Southern staples such as banana nut bread, ribs and apple pie. It’s also filled with unique family-favorites, including crab salsa, apricot game hens and pumpkin pineapple empanadas. Recipes are divided into six categories: Starters, Breads, Soups & Stews, Sides, Entrees and Desserts.
But you’ll find more than just great recipes in this book. Made in Texas’ rich images and descriptive writing illustrate how Texans celebrate their traditions through food. From the Citrus Fiesta in Mission to the Watermelon Thump in Luling, each region of the state has its own distinct cultural roots.
“Like all good cooking, when it’s blended together, you get an appetizing mixture of photos and recipes that is both rich and colorful,” said Rogers.
To create the book, hundreds of H-E-B customers submitted recipes that were carefully reviewed by H-E-B Partners and culinary experts. The cookbook also features a handful of recipes from Texas celebrities such as Troy Aikman, Lady Byrd Johnson, Mary Lou Retton and LeAnn Rimes.
The limited-edition cookbook is available in all H-E-B stores for $19.05 plus sales tax. H-E-B will donate $1.00 from the purchase of every cookbook to Texas food banks to aid in hunger relief and prevention efforts.
